What is Breast Reduction Surgery?

Breast reduction techniques vary depending on several factors, such as the patient’s individual condition, breast composition, extent of reduction desired and the surgeon’s personal recommendations.

Often, an incision is made around the nipple and downward on the breast, similar to a keyhole pattern. Through this incision, excess fat, tissue and skin is removed and the breasts are reshaped to achieve a smaller, lighter and shapelier contour. In most breast reduction procedures, the areola and nipple remain attached to the breast. However, in patients with extremely large or pendulous breasts, the nipple and areola may need to be removed and repositioned higher on the breast for optimum results. The areola may also be reduced in size if necessary.
